FIRE PREVENTION & PREPAREDNESS

Emergency Preparedness

It’s important to have a plan in place to protect you and your family in case of an emergency in the Town of Stouffville. Having an emergency plan and an emergency kit are the first steps to making sure you and your family are prepared.

Emergency kits

You should have an emergency “grab and go” kit ready that can provide for you and your family for at least 72 hours. You can use a duffel bag, backpack or container to store items. Make sure that your kit is always in an easily accessible spot and that everyone in your family knows where to find it.

Your emergency kit should include the following items:

  • Cash and bank account numbers
  • Clothing and blankets
  • Drinking water (4 L of water per person per day)
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Important documentation, such as ID and prescriptions
  • Medications
  • Non-perishable food (three days’ worth)
  • Personal care products and toiletries
  • Pet food

This list is to get you started, but is not a full, extensive list.

Emergency planning resources

Our Emergency Response Plan can help you plan for and deal with major emergencies such as tornados, floods and storms.

York Region’s Emergency Preparedness Guide Book has information to help you create an emergency plan. It also has a further detailed list for your emergency kit. You can download a copy from York Region’s website or pick up a hard copy from our fire station located at 100 Weldon Rd.

How we handle emergencies

To help plan and prepare for emergencies, Town staff meet at the Emergency Operations Centre to review emergency protocols on an annual basis. Review our Emergency Management By-law to learn more about how we plan for and manage emergencies.
