High Fire Hazard Rating In Effect In York Region

The Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire & Emergency Services (WSFES) would like to inform residents that the current local fire hazard rating in York Region has been assessed as high. This rating is due to the prevailing hot and dry conditions, which pose an increased risk of fire incidents.

WSFES urges all residents to exercise utmost caution and vigilance when engaging in any outdoor activities involving fire, such as the use of fire pits, open-air burning, or wood-fired BBQs. The following guidelines are provided to ensure the safety of individuals and the prevention of fire-related accidents:

Outdoor Fire Guidelines - Recreational Fires

It is the responsibility of property owners to adhere to the following minimum requirements prior to engaging in burning activities:

  • The fire must be contained and should not exceed dimensions of .75m x .75m in diameter and height.
  • Only clean wood products should be burned.
  • Continuous supervision of the fire is required until it is completely extinguished.
  • A means of extinguishment must be readily available.
  • Maintain a minimum distance of 3 meters from combustible materials.
  • Fires should not be lit when wind speeds exceed 20kph, when frequent changes in wind direction occur, or when visibility is compromised on any nearby highway.
  • Fires that emit excessive smoke, sparks, or cause a nuisance are strictly prohibited.

It is important to note that the fire hazard rating is subject to change based on prevailing conditions. Should the situation deteriorate, a burn ban may be implemented. The fire hazard rating is determined by the Fire Chief in collaboration with other fire departments across York Region.
