Town Passes By-law to Ban the Sale and Personal Use of Fireworks

STOUFFVILLE, ON – The Town of Stouffville has approved a new by-law prohibiting the sale and personal use of fireworks within town limits. This decision aims to reduce the risks of injury, noise disturbances and property damage associated with fireworks.  

The comprehensive ban is intended to simplify enforcement and better protect residents, pets, wildlife and the environment from the harmful effects of fireworks. By implementing a clear, town-wide policy, the Town aims to proactively prevent fires, reduce air pollution and ensure a more peaceful community environment.

“Personal fireworks, traditionally used for celebrations, can pose significant risks,” said Stouffville Mayor Iain Lovatt. “They can cause injuries, fires and disturbances that affect not only those directly using them but also surrounding residents and livestock. With the new by-law in place, we aim to prevent such incidents and ensure a safer community for all.”

“Creating a clear and consistent rule makes it easier for our enforcement teams to do their jobs,” said Becky Jamieson, Stouffville’s Commissioner of Corporate Services and Town Clerk. “We thank residents for their understanding and support.”

Under the new by-law, violations related to fireworks will be processed through the Town’s Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS). Individuals found in contravention may be subject to fines ranging from $500 to $1,000.

Residents who want to see fireworks are invited and encouraged to attend the official town-led Victoria Day on May 16, 2025, and July 1st Canada Day Firework Celebrations.
