Town Crier

 

About the role 

Before newspapers and social media, communities relied on the Town Crier to share important news, local events, and government updates—loud and clear for all to hear! While the role is now mostly ceremonial, the reinstating of Stouffville’s Town Crier will play an important part in our community, declaring official announcements, opening special events, and adding a touch of tradition to local celebrations. As a proud ambassador of the Town, the Crier helps spread civic pride and community spirit wherever they go. 

 

Selection process

  • Apply online by August 15th 11:59 p.m., including an upload of a short video demonstrating your ability to cry loudly and clearly about the addition of a Town Crier to the Town of Stouffville and what makes this such a great community 
  • Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews and a first-round screening process 
  • Final selections of top candidates may be invited to audition in person. 
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a Police Vulnerable Sector Check and comply to Town policies 
  • Anticipated start date of responsibilities is January 1, 2026 (subject to change based on operational needs).  

 

Duties and responsibilities  

  • Shall act as a presenter during Town sanctioned events including, but not limited to, civic functions and celebrations.  
  • Shall act as an ambassador for the Stouffville community and its residents.  
  • Shall attend only Town sanctioned events in their role as Town Crier, unless a formal request for the Town Crier’s services has been received through the Town staff. Outside requests for the Town Crier’s services shall be subject to the Town Crier’s discretion and availability, as well as the discretion of Town staff. 
  • Shall behave with decorum and integrity, treating all people with respect, regardless of their race, age, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability or position.  
  • Shall make no statement, obligation or commitment on behalf of the Council for the Town of Stouffville and/or the Corporation of the Town of Stouffville.  
  • Shall not make personal or political public proclamations espousing their own views and/or beliefs. 
  • The personal views and beliefs of the Town Crier shall not interfere with their ability to act in the role.  
  • Shall comply with all applicable Town of Stouffville policies and procedures.  
  • Shall be responsible for the maintenance of the official uniform.  
  • Shall coordinate with Town staff., or their designate, to write, review, and approve announcements and cries. Cries and announcements shall be non-political and non-religious in nature and shall be in good taste and in keeping with the spirit of the office.  
  • All travel and other expenses are the responsibility of the Town Crier. 

 

Honorariums 

The successful candidate will be outfitted in a custom uniform in addition to up to $200 per event to represent the Town of Stouffville.
